People prefer a boy earning more than girl for marriage not even society but even a boy who is marrying wished for a gud looking girl but her earning should be lesser its not in boy's case but also a girl wants the same that her would be of more status. Y this earning issue comes in between the relations. It may be because  for boys it for self respect , if girls earn they think that girl will be the master of house. That such an assault on their ego ant'it ?  Even society consider a low earning boy lacking something.
For girl' s side their family members often have this thought that if u are earning less than are u gng to feed off  our girls 'earning and this lead to further complication. Another reason could be that even women are today not encouraged to work after marriage so in that case they want someone who can fullfill their demands.
While we sit and talk about equalities we are still to come to terms in real life. This issue lead to dowry system if a family demands a boy of more status then boy side can demand more for their boy . But in today's all are equal it shouldnt matter who is earning more and less. If both are able to live comfortably with combined salary then it doesnt matter who bring more to home.
Talking to society point few people will always talk behind ur back no matter what u do .If  both are married then it will be their money it wont be his or her . Money cant buy happiness everyone knows still dowry increasing day by day... Find someone who would rather love you not care about how much u earn or how dowry u will bring. Find someone who is ready to be a part of your dream . Find a nerve in ur brain Log Kya Kahenge and cut it off. You are choosing a life partner not a business partner woh has lots of money to invest . Life is not such a bad thing after all provided the people u are with should be right.
